Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had an Italian composition project that required her to imagine herself a director of a family sitcom. The goal - as I read the directions - was to make use of skills acquired in her course to date (basic sentence structures in the present, simple adjectives, vocabulary related to the family, idiomatic expressions involving age, etc.). In the end, she was supposed to write a basic description of the sitcom, give it a title, and describe the cast members (age, physical description, job, etc.) to round out the assignment. We worked on editing this assignment while reviewing the relevant vocabulary and grammatical rules that applied."
"Today, I gave the boys a review of skills relating to third grade. These covered addition and subtraction with regrouping, writing fractions for shapes, multiplication and division facts, place values up to thousands with blocks, and a multiplication chart for the boys to fill in. Student 1 has a few division facts to correct for homework, and Student 2 has the subtraction sheet and division sheet to complete for homework. Both boys did well, considering these concepts were third-grade skills; however, they seem to be on par with what they are doing in school."
"Student worked on some of his homework from Algebra 2. We were working on parent functions and transformations, as well as identifying functions (and non-functions), graphing, and domains and ranges. He found our session to be very helpful and was pleased with the work we did together. He looks forward to our next session this upcoming Friday, where we will be covering the rest of this week's classwork. He will be sending me his materials each day and have questions for me when we meet on Friday that I can help him with."
"The subjunctive and the uses for POR and PARA were covered today. The student is very intelligent and she is learning Spanish quickly. She practiced the uses for POR and PARA and the subjunctive versus the indicative moods. Her pronunciation is excellent! We practiced conversation, too."
"We worked on the SAT Writing and Language test after completing a vocabulary review of Lessons 6 and 7, as well as mini-lesson on colon usage. He continues to struggle with the "big picture" questions on the writing and language section. He did, however, try the tactic where he reads each passage twice in order to improve in the "big picture" category. There was slight improvement with his score; we will continue to work on this."
"We covered how to talk about cell phones and how to say "make a phone call." We talked a little about the cell phone culture in Japan as well as the mascots of Japan. We also began phrases on cars and transportation. We talked a little bit about the differences in transportation."
