Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we focused on converting radicals to exponential form and vice versa. I worked with Student A to help him understand going from radical to exponential form. He was finally able to understand the material and feel better about it. We also briefly went over graphing and exponential growth. With Student B we did a review of the concepts such as multiplying/ dividing, simplifying exponential and radical form, and graphing."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow, so we spent today's session going over his review guide and doing practice problems. The quiz will cover factoring and solving quadratic equations, so I had him do a lot of practice factoring, especially with problems in the form ax^2+bx+c. After I walked him through the process a few times, he felt comfortable doing them by himself. By the end of our session, he felt very prepared for the quiz."
"We worked on word problems designed to help calculate simple interest. In addition I taught her how to simplify equations with exponents."
"The student has a history test Friday, the first in the new class. We went through her notes, which were nicely laid out and easy to study with (fill in the blank notes from teacher, which she had completely filled out). We went through major concepts of the three chapters that are going to be on the test. We will hopefully be meeting weekly from here so we will be able to take our time and study less material in future sessions."
"The student was working on turning fractions to decimals. The activity asked her to find a pattern in the decimal answers of x/9 and y/11. We also talked about the trick to multiply and divide numbers by powers of 10. At the end of the session, I felt she had a better understanding of these shortcuts."
"We went over the student's test from last week and questions she got wrong. She came to a good understanding of them. She had some trouble with her positives and negatives in distributing them correctly. We will focus more on them in the next session. We practiced equations where she could exercise the rules for positives and negatives. We practiced how to find the slopes for perpendicular and parallel lines. We also practiced finding the equation of the line that passes through a given point for perpendicular and parallel lines. I also think she could benefit from just working out regular algebraic equations to strengthen her skills in that area. I think it will give her more confidence as she learns new concepts in class. We will try to focus on solving algebraic equations next session as well."
