How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Summer break is one of the most highly anticipated points of the year for many students. The freedom from a rigorous routine and the time to explore or relax is where the fun of childhood lies. However, it is during these months between grade levels that many students lose hard-won academic skills. This phenomenon is known as summer learning loss. While it happens to some extent for all students, Losses may be significant enough to cause a two- to three-month deficit by the beginning of the next school year. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors may connect you with tutors in Omaha, NE, who are skilled at helping students optimize their summer and encourage learning gains rather than learning losses.

Experienced tutors may also work with children who struggled throughout the school year. Summer provides an excellent opportunity for students to catch up on concepts they found challenging and begin preparing for the coming year. We may match you with an enthusiastic summer tutor in Omaha who may encourage your child to aim higher. Allowing your student to build their academic confidence in a low-stress setting may have a tremendous impact when they return to school. Tutors may also share tips and resources on how to study more effectively, take notes that they may use, and face exams with less anxiety.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Omaha, NE Summer tutoring
In this session, I brought an organization rubric that I will be using with the student. We reviewed the sections and scores. He will keep the rubric in a page protector clipped inside his binder for us to check daily once school begins. We met at the library for this session to find a book that he can begin reading and try to finish before school starts. I brought a list of recommended titles and gave him tips on how to choose one. After he chose one, I provided him with a weekly reading log in which he will write a daily summary of his reading for the day. He agreed to complete 1-2 entries and read 20-30 minutes for each before our next session. I also had him complete part of a pre-algebra diagnostic to assess what skills we should review in greater detail before school begins.

Today I met with my student and his parents for the first time to talk about goals and expectations for tutoring. I then spoke with my student alone and got a sense of his particular needs and struggles academically. He is building confidence and organization as a learner. We talked about some strategies and then I gave him a writing exercise focused on identifying his strengths.

I checked the student's homework which was the final details of the fashion design pattern project. It was completed and I tried it on so that he could see the final product on a person. I modeled the dress for his family so that they could see his hard work and follow through. We then completed the language arts and mathematics portion of the SAT practice tests in his school's website.

I have started incorporating concepts and strategies from the 8th grade ELA's into our discussions. These include the feeling or atmosphere created by language and how the author communicates big ideas about a character or the plot through details. These types of questions were new for the student and she struggled with getting specific. She's comfortable with the big ideas (the caller agrees with the radio talk show host), but less attuned to the nuances (the caller and the host are conservative and are daring liberals to call in and debate). We kept working with our hypothesis-evidence strategy and she was able to figure out the above example. She will read until Chapter 17 for next time, take notes in her book and character chart, and also complete two notes on her own.

We discussed how to appropriately email teachers, and address issues, the process of researching and writing a paper and many strategies to stay organized. In the past he has struggled with staying organized, but seems to have an understanding of what to do; just an issue of following through.

The student finished The Hobbit. He reviewed what happened in the end of the book; then, we talked through what a report on the book would look like. We did the info card for his diorama, which looked great. We took his summer reading list and added the book descriptions.
