How can a Reading tutor help you?

When it comes to reading, your child is pressured to stay on target as early as kindergarten. Decoding words, learning vocabulary, and word recognition are activities they need to try to understand before moving on to the next level. The Common Core Standards dictate children must learn how to make logical inferences from text, be able to summarize key details, and understand how and why key elements of a story develop the way they do. These include events, ideas, and characters. From interpreting words and phrases to integrating knowledge and ideas, the content may be challenging, especially if your student learns at a slower pace than most. Expert private instructors are different from classroom teachers in that they may work with your child's pace and learning style. Varsity Tutors may find you an expert reading tutor in Omaha, NE, who may develop a study plan that is designed specifically with your student in mind.

A private tutor may meet and immediately assess what level your child is reading at. The information gathered is used to create custom personalized lessons, during which their tutor may cover weak topics in detail, at any pace needed for your child to learn. There is no time limit for covering a specific trouble area. The professional instructor may also put your student at ease, calming any anxieties and helping to boost their confidence, which in part boosts the learning process. Contact our educational directors in Omaha for reading tutors who may try to help address all of your child's problem areas, and they may also help them prepare for the Nebraska State Accountability Assessments exam.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Omaha, NE Reading tutoring
This session was an excellent first session. The student reviewed his alphabet, the difference between consonants and vowels, long and short sounds for vowels, and the sounds made by each letter. We also used word association for each letter. He is enthusiastic about improving his reading skills and works very hard to understand. Excellent first session.

We reviewed vowels (identification and short sounds), sounds of consonants (primarily: b, d, u and y), and level 1 and 2 sight words. We had been working on fundamentals for a few lessons; therefore, I wanted to segue into reading books to demonstrate and practice the fundamentals he had been learning. We began with the classic, Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat." I made a new list of sight words based on the first page of the book so that he could read and I would assist him on the words that he did not yet learn to sound out. I gave him a little advice about handling information from school and home.

We reviewed two of the student's writing homework assignments. We completed one in full and then did a majority of the second assignment. The second assignment is his Memoir 50-point assignment. It appears that his second draft is due Friday. He was given some advice and we went over fleshing out the essay more. Lastly, we worked on a rough outline for his English project that is due Friday as well. He is to rewrite a scene from The Book Thief. He will be working on that scene tomorrow and have a rough draft for his mom to look at in the evening. I will hopefully clean up and flesh out the essay more on Tuesday evening.

We worked on his short i spelling words and "th" sound, read a little from his spelling workbook, and wrote a few pages for his Mouse King book. The student had no issues with this week's regular spelling words, and he said he got a 10/10 on his spelling test last week, but missed his bonus words. We ended by working on thank you notes for his birthday presents.

Student 1 and I worked on his homework words. We discussed his homework and began reading a Flat Stanley book. Student 2 and I reviewed his math homework and I found a few minor errors. We are working on taking our time with work so we don't miss anything. Also, we are working on slowing down our pace so his handwriting doesn't suffer. He and I also worked on reading comprehension and elaborating on responses.
