The PSAT is a preliminary version of the SAT. It helps students prepare for the SAT, as well as the ACT. An impressive score on the PSAT may also open the door to awards such as National Merit Scholarships. If your child is planning on taking the PSAT and you would like to give them an edge up, then Varsity Tutors may help your child streamline their studying to suit their specific needs by finding them a skilled PSAT tutor in Omaha, NE, today.

The educational directors at Varsity Tutors may connect you with tutors in Omaha who are skilled at helping students prepare for the PSAT. As an expert in the PSAT, the tutor may know exactly what tips and strategies to teach your child so that they have all the skills necessary to potentially improve on the exam. The tutor may be able to evaluate your child's individual learning style and plan sessions that are specifically designed to accommodate their needs and help them achieve success. Sessions may be focused on any of the three sections of the test: evidence-based reading, writing and language, and math. Working one-on-one may allow your student to focus only on their problem areas and make sessions that much more efficient. Whatever their specific needs are, rest assured that an expert PSAT tutor in Omaha, NE, may help your child hone their skills and achieve the highest score possible on the exam.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

The student yet again did a great job. She scored 42 out of 48 on the reading section of the SAT that she completed for homework. We also completed another reading section during our session and scored 44 out 48 correct. I know that the slightly subjective element of some of the reading questions is not to her liking; she wants to be a National Merit finalist and she wants concrete questions and answers. It's hard to convince her of how well she is doing. I did remind her that National Merit doesn't require a certain score for the math and a certain score for the reading/ language; it's just the composite score that matters. And although she does well on the reading, she does even better on the math. I've given her the reading section from the PSAT for homework.

We went over the practice sections the student did since last section. Then I gave him a quiz on the math and writing concepts. After that, we went over the writing section again. Then, we went over the reading section from prep book. After this, we started doing the practice math problems and got up through the sixth one in the book.

Today the student and I spent the first hour working on an online test for his algebra 2 class. The topics included solving equations with three variables and graphing inequalities. With a tiny bit of guidance, he did very well. The next two hours we studied for the upcoming PSAT. He is stronger on reading comprehension, so we focused on grammar and math. The math involved various word problems and logic, which he understood pretty well. In the grammar section we covered superlatives, independent and dependent clauses. We also did some work restructuring paragraphs. A little practice spread out over a long period of time will definitely prepare him for the SAT.

The student completed the work that I asked her to do. She also completed some of the math portions of the practice test so that we could see if there were any concerns for her with that area. She noticed a few types of questions that she found she was not confident with answering. This dealt with main ideas of a passage, and the follow up questions of finding evidence to support your answer. I am confident that she can do these types of questions. The issue seemed to be more with the types of passages that she had to read. The ones that are more scientific in nature were the ones that gave her pause. We agreed that it was most likely the unfamiliarity of that type of writing. During the last session I had her take a portion of the practice test, so that I could evaluate how her timing is. We found that she had the extra time to spend on questions that might be more challenging for her. This was something that I reminded her of and suggested to use some of her extra time concentrating on the evidence based questions and reading more thoroughly. I also suggested highlighting key terms or passages as she reads. We found that if she specifically does a reads close reading of the introduction and conclusion, she will generally be able to narrow down a correct answer. We did more practice with the types of questions she found challenging from her work that she completed before the session. I feel that she was more confident after practice and implementing the tips we discussed. We worked on another timed session with the math portion of the practice test. She completed half of the test and had ample time left to do the rest. We looked over the incorrect answers and made note of anything that she felt was a simple error and not a lack of understanding. There weren't any that I feel were from a lack of understanding. Rushing through the questions was more of the issue, however she did well on the practice test. We took some time discussing how to use the time allotted for the test, how to make an educated guess when she is unsure, and when to move on and come back to a troubling problem. I had her take the last half of the math portion while we timed her. She took more time, although the last half was heavy with hard problems, I think she did better with pacing herself. I also left her with some final tips and strategies for taking the test.

We covered the Math portion of the PSAT during today's lesson. The student did well with the multiple choice portion of the PSAT, but struggled with the free response portion. We went through some free response questions step-by-step towards the end of the lesson. She knew the main concepts and equations, but just needed a refresher on a few of the questions. We will be doing a full PSAT test tomorrow during our tutoring lesson.
