Session Summaries by ASPIRE Tutors

Omaha, NE ASPIRE tutoring
We went back and shored up remaining weak points around multi-step equations. I offered a new system for visualizing the terms of an equation as quantities on a scale to help with understanding which steps to take and when. I assigned the student some problems to help him work on problem areas.

This session we used the SAT book to full effect! We went over practice problems for Reading he got wrong, and he arrived at the right answers after discussing them. We then did two timed simulations of Writing and Reading, respectively, and went over answers. We set up a system for him to learn as many SAT words as possible between now and the test-- roughly a month away. This session was quite productive in that it established he is very good at completing questions in the allotted time, which is one less thing to worry about. As he learns more SAT words he will improve the sentence completions, and with practice he will improve on sentence correction/improvements in Writing as well! He is progressing quite well, and I look forward to continuing this method next session, as the simulated test environment seems to work very well and allow us to cover more in one session.

We spent the hour going over questions from the reading comprehension section. In particular, we focused on passage-based questions about the purpose/central message/tone of the passage. We also went over some fill in the blank questions. We are working on improving the student's SAT score, especially in the reading comprehension and writing sections.

Today, we went over specific topics that the student wanted a bit more clarification on: absolute value equations and graphs, sequences and series, and probability. I reviewed the concepts with examples, and we practiced with questions in the test prep book. The student seemed to have a good grasp of the concepts, but the actual calculator work could be improved upon in terms of entering the numbers and functions to be solved. She can cut time and finish a problem faster by improving her calculator skills, so I showed her shortcuts and led her through how to approach a problem in the fastest way possible. Then we went over some science exam questions. We went over some chemistry and physics problems, such as gas laws and Newton's laws. I also clarified what an inverse and direct relationship is in relation to the gas laws, and in general the math graphs for those. I feel like she does a good job on the sciences, and with continued practice and review, she will definitely improve her score.

Reviewed mostly critical reading where the student needs the most work. Almost all of his mistakes, except when he simply doesn't know the vocabulary, have to do with neglecting important details or lapses of attention (similar, really). He will need to be even more disciplined in these next few months, but he has the skills. The long passages are the problem. He did one where he got 8/11, but the next one he did he got 13/13--better focus.

The student and I reviewed the math sections of exam 1 from the official guide to the SAT. She performed well (650), but needs to be a little more organized to avoid making minor errors. I introduced the strategies of plugging in answers and plugging in your own numbers and the situations when it is appropriate to employ these strategies. We practiced some of these strategies, which we will continue next time before finishing our review of algebra.
