How can Physical Chemistry tutoring help you?

Physical chemistry is best described as the study of how matter behaves on a molecular and atomic level and how reactions occur. These reactions lead chemists to develop new theories all the time. Many careers use physical chemistry, including chemical engineering, hazardous waste management, and pharmacology. While it may be an interesting and exciting subject, it may also be intimidating and challenging. You may get help with whatever part of physical chemistry has you stuck. Call the Varsity Tutors educational directors in Omaha to find an expert physical chemistry tutor today.

If you are struggling with atomic mass, volume, and Dalton's law, you have come to the right place. Perhaps you are having problems learning equilibria, molality, and enthalpy. Complex topic such as kinetics and acid/base reactions may be confusing too. No matter what you are struggling with, there is a certified tutor ready to help. We previewed the reactions of carbonyls, particularly the addition-elimination reaction, which is very well-conserved with all the carbonyl compounds. We noted nuanced differences between the carbonyl compounds, such as reactivities based on the groups adjacent to the carbonyl, and slightly different reactions. For example, the carboxylic acid may react both at the carbonyl site and as an acid, while acid chlorides mainly act as carbonyl attack centers with a good Cl- leaving group. There are several other reactions that need attention later on, but the addition-elimination reaction is the most prominent.

This was a great session! We covered acid rain issues, ozone pollution, nitrogen pollution and cultural eutrophication, and we worked on the math portion of an FRQ from the student's previous exam. The student is doing a great job of staying on top of the material, and she always expresses keen interest in what we're covering. Next time, we'll focus more on the math portions of the AP exam.

We briefly reviewed material from last session - good retention! We worked through the remainder of the module on cell processes, and formed a direction for study on the concepts which were harder to remember. The student seems to learn well with writing, so repetitive writing was chosen as the preferred studying style. We covered a handout module on bioinformatics. Summary of topics covered: cell structure (endoplasmic reticulum, vesicles and vacuoles, lysosomes, Golgi body, cilia and flagella, centrioles, cell wall, chloroplasts) cell homeostasis (diffusion and osmosis, hypo/ iso/ hypertonic solutions, passive/ active transport, sodium/ potassium pump) and (briefly) photosynthesis and cellular respiration. For next session, we will examine student's progress on photosynthesis and continue to move through material. He was quick to understand topics and think critically when presented with more abstract problems. He agreed to memorize the basics of photosynthesis and cellular respiration through repetitive writing. Productive session today!

The student's parents had made it clear to me that she is normally an excellent student (A+) in her chemistry class and was just struggling now because she had missed several classes due to injury. This aligned exactly with what I saw. We mostly worked with stoichiometry problems and I explained it as a 4 (at most) step process. She had a packet from her teacher that she worked problems from. She just needed minor reminders about making sure units cancelled after the initial stoich explanation. After working several of these problems, we also covered the topic of limiting and excess reagents and she worked some problems on a take-home test involving those topics. She had a positive attitude throughout, caught on very quickly, and really was only struggling due to having missed the classes when the topics were initially explained. She finished most of her work within our session and let me know that she would contact me later this if she had additional questions or problems on other topics she had missed. Wins: The student required minimal help after the initial explanation and seemed to have a much firmer grasp on the concept of stoichiometry and limiting reagents by the end of our session.

The student has a test covering her two most recent assignments on torque and angular motion. We went through problems on the torque equation. First, I focused on making sure she had the basics down, as we went through the first few problems. Then, I asked her if she had any that were particularly challenging, so I went through how to set them up. I plan to look over the problems we weren't able to cover, to see if there are any that illustrate another concept she should review for tomorrow. She seemed to get the material once it was set-up and explained.
