Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Omaha, NE Organic Chemistry tutoring
For this session, we focused on working through IUPAC/ nomenclature practice problems. She feels this is what she needed the most help on before her exam tomorrow, and thus we focused solely on this. I agree with her, especially because she has demonstrated in previous sessions that she has a good foundation of the first month's material. She seemed hesitant at first, but after a few practice problems she began identifying the patterns behind nomenclature and was doing them on her own. I asked that she work on a handful of more problems after we finished the session, as I am confident she will be ready for the exam after that.

The student and I reviewed some concepts about radical stabilities and the bromination reaction type. We talked about how exothermic/endothermic reactions will affect selectivity, and reviewed important concepts in the Sn2 mechanism. She and I are hoping to meet again when she has learned more about Sn1, and before her exam next week.

The student's test is coming up on Thursday, and she was given some new class material she had to know for that. I talked with her a bit about nucleophilicity and electrophilicity, carbocation stability, carbocation rearrangements, and electron pushing when drawing reaction mechanisms. I tried to take a step back and hand the reins over to her to answer some of the questions herself. I think that she started getting a better understanding of the material, and became a little more comfortable with answering questions. We will meet tomorrow for another review session, where we will go over a practice test.

We covered hemiacetals/acetals and their properties for the beginning part of the session. Next, we went over some prelab material, looking at different chemical tests that can be used to distinguish between aldehydes, ketones and alcohols. Lastly, we reviewed for the student's exam tomorrow on oxidation/reduction reactions, nomenclature, and dehydration reactions. She was doing well today on the reactions, and with a few more practice problems, I believe she will be ready for her exam. Good luck!
