Session Summaries by Literature Tutors

Omaha, NE Literature tutoring
We reviewed all of the student's classes, how he is doing in each of them, and what he likes/doesn't like. We then outlined actionable next steps to take between now and our next session. He is very smart, clever, and fun, so we just need to work on strategies for channeling that towards schoolwork. I look forward to working with him further!

On Tuesday, we finished the essay that we had started the previous week. The student wrote the final body paragraph and the conclusion. Then, we read through the entire essay and did some final edits. She is doing really well at applying the skills and techniques that we went over in previous lessons to her writing as we go along. For the second half of the lesson, we worked through some reading comprehension practice questions from the GED. She has a good memory for what she reads, and she did well on most of the questions.

At this session, the student once again had her book, so we continued working on her one-pager. She made excellent progress, and it is currently about 2/3 complete. As she was writing, I could see how much effort she was putting into each individual sentence, which is an excellent skill for her to hone. Without my aid, she was able to recall specific details from the book that she thought would be excellent examples to use as evidence as quotes, which is an improvement from the way she originally shied away from detail-oriented questions. Additionally, I was once again able to see how strong her ideas are when spoken out loud. Overall, I am seeing much progress each time I meet with her, and I believe she should have her one-pager done within the next few sessions, after which I can help her through the revision process.

The student and I worked on annotating reading material. He was required to annotate an article for English. The instructions were to identify three passages of interest, explain his rationale for each choice in the adjacent margin, and then formulate three questions he would like to ask the author that were not discussed in the text. He displayed a positive attitude toward the material during the session, evidenced by his attentiveness and level of engagement. We discussed a simple strategy for annotating points in a literary work. I suggested that he use what naturally piques his interest when reading. The win from this session was twofold: the enthusiasm he expressed about our sessions starting up again after the holidays and his grades/report card for the first half of the school year. He did very well, showing exceptional improvement throughout the fall semester. He, his parents, and I are very pleased!

On January 11th, the student and I prepared for his math final for an hour by going over some pre-algebra problems. He was in excellent shape and is a very bright kid overall. Then, on January 19th, he and I went over a reading assignment for English class. We worked on writing complete paragraphs and talked about the story he wrote. He is a great writer, both in demonstrating comprehension and writing free verse poetry.

Today, we worked on the student's "great issues" paper for History. I helped him organize his thoughts and write a succinct, coherent thesis statement. I then encouraged him to write an outline of the entire essay. In the outline, he filled in the thesis and two body paragraph topic sentences. I then gave him comments and feedback as he wrote the hook for the essay and outlined, in detail, the introductory paragraph. We made a plan for looking at his rough draft of the essay next Wednesday.
