The student had a good session this afternoon. I'm pleased to report that she received an 87 on her quiz--good job! I'm confident that we can continue to raise those grades. She was fairly well prepared for our session this afternoon, although we spent most of it talking about a chapter that she hadn't yet had a chance to review. I've instructed her to complete all of her chapter outlines by the next time that she sees me.

We focused on identifying larger themes and ideas that will explain the historical events the student is studying. The reason behind that approach is that even if she does not memorize every single date, event, and person, she will still be able to get many questions correct if she understands the ideas that were prevalent at the time (she proved this on some practice MC questions). Tomorrow, we will finish going over Chapter 23 (there are only 5 more discussion questions). I have asked her to bring any questions she might have as the material sinks in. We will also do a practice test, focusing on strategies for answering MC questions correctly.

The student and I went over the notes she had for a speech she was giving in class this week on the fault of the South in the Civil War. She and I went over some key terms that she and her teammates would be addressing, and we defined them together. As we went along, I helped her draw connections between the topics and form conclusive statements for her opening. I also helped her more fully understand the Radical Republicans' views on Reconstruction and how each of those were and weren't adapted by Congress.

I met with the student as a review session before her unit exam. Her mother has spoken with her teacher and they have come to an agreement to work out verifying her content-based knowledge. The student and I feel as though her current struggle comes from understanding what her exam question is asking, rather than placing as much of an emphasis on her unit knowledge. From here on we will pay exam comprehension equal attention by utilizing the textbook online unit quizzes to practice.
