Graduate school has become increasingly competitive. For prospective graduate school candidates, taking the GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is often a requirement by both public and private schools alike. These tests not only measure a student's ability to succeed at a higher academic level, but they also show schools how scholarly a candidate may be in their desired subject field. The GRE is used to gain a better understanding of a student's analytical skills, as well as critical thinking. GRE tutoring may be very helpful as the student gets ready for this major test.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Omaha, NE GRE tutoring
In this session, the student and I worked through a practice quantitative section from his online resources. We identified some areas where he can improve; for instance, he needs to memorize a handful of formulas that were necessary to solve a few problems. We also reviewed some strategies that will help figuring out the quantitative comparison questions like simplifying each quantity, and transforming the middle information.

We went over medium and difficult math questions as well as easy, medium and difficult reading comprehension questions. We also covered general test taking strategies. She needed help the most with parallelograms and frequency distributions. The student had a positive attitude towards the material reviewed. I included strategies for the types of math and verbal problems we went over, particularly strategies for estimating on quantitative reasoning questions. I also included general test taking and preparation strategies for the days leading up to when she takes the test. I encouraged her to write more practice essays.

Today was my first session with the student as she prepares to take the GRE. We briefly went over the general structure of the test, and focused for the rest of the session on review of algebra concepts that she will likely see tested. Specifically, we went over basic arithmetic, fractions and decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions, and averages. She will complete practice questions for homework, and we will go over any problems she encountered during our next session.
