The student completed chapter 8 of Schmidt's "Okay for Now." We discussed narrative patterns and foreshadowing, with particular attention to the narrator's anticipation that "when things start to go pretty good, something usually happens to turn everything bad." Inasmuch as the previous chapter was uncharacteristically uplifting, the events of chapter 8 were therefore predictable within the pattern of crime and social turmoil established by the novel's earlier chapters. We did some brief grammar review before calling it a day. Tomorrow we will cover chapter 9, and by Wednesday we should complete "Okay for Now."

In this session I reviewed introductions with the student and then spent time with new vocabulary. As part of this lesson we also worked on the plural forms of nouns and introduced verbs. We also focused on the difference between verbs, nouns and adjectives. As a tool I created a small number game that was based on creating new sentences with the learned vocabulary. Introduced alphabet. I did see that he remembered the basics of introductions and was more comfortable practicing the intros without a script. I would like to see him write more during the lessons.

After a week off, the student was ready to get right back into the routine we established at our previous sessions. We started by reviewing vocabulary from the previous two weeks and then added 25 more words. In addition to vocabulary, we will now be working on memorizing root words and learning how to put them together to make an educated guess on words with unknown definitions. He did very well with this in his first exercise. He is almost finished with his independent reading book, which he will be quizzed on in the next session. We will also begin with test-taking strategies for the ISEE exams in our next session.
