Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

Omaha, NE Graduate Test Prep tutoring
In this session the student and I went over some content from the practice GRE she took yesterday. We focused on a couple topics in particular; first we worked on probability type questions, how to set them up and what factors are important when solving them. We also worked on how to solve a system of linear equations through substitution and combination. We spent a good amount of time working on geometry problems, and I feel that the student is getting better with how she needs to approach these types of problems. She will look over the rest of her practice exam and see if there are any other questions she can solve with the strategies we talked about today, and we will go over them next session.

Tonight was my first session with the student as he prepares to retake the GRE in a few weeks. We focused on the Verbal portion of the exam today, starting with some general strategies for learning vocab and figuring out meanings of unfamiliar words. We then discussed the structures of the sentence equivalence questions and text completion questions, and outlined a general way to approach and think about both types of problems. He then completed a set of practice problems for both types, and he walked me through his reasoning process for each one. He got all 12 questions right, and was implementing some of the strategies I suggested already with a lot of success. I think he'll make a lot of progress as he continues to study!

We worked on geometry problems. The student did well, and she has built up her confidence greatly over the time I've been working with her.

In today's session we spent the first hour working on the Verbal section of the test. We finished the third practice test, which we had started in our last session. We then worked on vocabulary by reviewing the word lists I shared with the student on Tuesday. He created new flashcards for unfamiliar words, and we will continue to use the flashcards and word lists to build vocabulary in future sessions. I also suggested that he work with the flashcards over the weekend. In the second half of today's session, we transitioned to preparing for the Quantitative section of the GRE. I introduced the basic format and question types that he will encounter in the Quantitative section. We then began to review foundational concepts, such as percentages, ratios, simultaneous equations, symbolism, special triangles, and basic computational skills. He mentioned that he has particularly struggled with geometry questions in the past, and this is an area that we will focus on in future sessions. We worked through several practice problems. He did a great job throughout the session, and I would like to note that he was very proficient with much of the Quantitative material we covered today (especially simultaneous equations and symbolism questions). Next time, we will move forward with test prep for the Quantitative section of the GRE (moving from the foundational review to the three sections of the test: 1 - quantitative comparison; 2 - problem solving; and 3 - data interpretation), and also continue to review flashcards to help retain the new vocabulary terms we've covered so far. Our next meeting will be Tuesday.

Today, the student and I began by discussing his progress and trying to set a timeline for the rest of his studying. He and I made a study schedule for the next week in an effort to provide him with more structure. We reviewed one of the practice sets that he completed this past week.

The student and I focused on sentence correction today. We did a number of mid to hard range questions from the official guide. I also gave him a quick refresher on the advanced arithmetic and number theory questions. I referred him to the quant and verbal guides for additional practice materials. Good luck on the exam!
