We read a story together and I said the name of the objects in the pictures. He repeated the words after me, and he showed me that he knew what some of them were in English. We did the same with another book, and he was asking what the things in the picture were. He definitely warmed up to me and felt comfortable speaking by the end. I think flashcards with the alphabet and pictures of simple words would be very helpful for him.

We specifically covered language "groups," which I defined as specialized topics an adult EL may come across and learn at different rates. For example, the language of finance and banking or the language of physical health and illness might come more slowly than the languages of shopping and leisure for some users simply based on frequency of exposure. The student and I pinpointed some particular areas she wanted to improve upon. We then discussed her business, with her explaining the history and nature of her business and me offering English terminology that related to some of her work. We ended the lesson with her explaining the Cyrillic alphabet to me so that I can better understand how she is translating when she is writing.
