How can Elementary Math tutoring help you?

Math may often have an unpleasant connotation for many students, and it may bring to mind frustrating struggles and annoyance. The subject simply doesn't click with some students, and it may take time outside of the classroom to fully comprehend certain topics within the subject. Just because math is aggravating for some certainly does not take away from its importance, and having an understanding of it is crucial for daily activities that include handling money and managing time. It's crucial that your child begin comprehending math early and developing productive studying abilities at a young age. For that reason, our educational directors at Varsity Tutors may find you professional elementary math tutors in Omaha, NE, whose primary aim is to help your child do well with any math course.

It is important that your child is able to learn at a pace that is suitable for them; oftentimes courses go too quickly for students, and they find themselves falling behind. This is a dangerous trap because the further behind a student falls, the more likely they are to struggle to catch up. Varsity Tutors may help you find a tutor in Omaha to try to help your child create a study plan that works to help them be prepared for their elementary math course, end of year exam, or Nebraska State Accountability Assessment, and that they learn at a speed that fits them. Your child's tutor is able to make custom lesson plans that analyze their strengths, weaknesses, preferred learning habits, and motivations as students. Math is often not the most glamorous subject for students, but your child's tutor may potentially help to make sure that the learning is as fun and rewarding as possible. Your child may take action in their course with an expert elementary math tutor in Omaha.

Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Omaha, NE Elementary Math tutoring
I began today's session by reviewing what I went over with the boys yesterday. For Student 1, this was spelling, telling time, and addition/subtraction word problems. I expanded on the spelling words with him by having him write these words in his own sentences. Additionally, I introduced new words today, and I also began to teach him about nouns. Math was focused on word problems today, because he can do calculations without any difficulty, until they are put into a word problem. In this case, he experiences difficulty. I will continue to work with him on word problems. At the end of the session, he had time to appeal to his creative side and sketch. Student 2 reviewed the letters he learned yesterday, as well as continued to learn the letters in the alphabet. He practiced writing the letters, saying the letters, and understand what sounds these letters make. I also introduced more numbers to him, and how to count them. I would like him to make more drawings during our sessions, and to think creatively. I will continue to build upon previous lessons with both of these boys, in order to expand their knowledge in English and Math.

The student and I practiced multiple types of math skills in our session tonight. We started with correcting her week's work of shapes and patterns. We then did some practice with length in a Singapore math book. Afterwards, I showed her two videos on fractions, and we did some more practice with fractions in her book. Lastly, we did a review of multiplication using a card game. She had the most difficulty with understanding equivalent fractions (but this is a very new concept for her). She was excited to learn and watch the videos. As she is starting school next week, I am excited to see how she does in her first few weeks back.

The student did a great job today. We worked on her math literacy. First we counted by twos, threes, fives and by 10s on the 100s chart. Then we made our own base 10 blocks, base 5 blocks and 1s blocks and experimented with different ways to represent different numbers. For example 19 can be 19 ones, or 1 ten a five block and ones. We got all the way to thirty. I did this so that for the next step I can work with her on regrouping in subtraction. She worked very hard. Her parents should be pleased.

Today the student finished her math homework. We worked on expanded form of numbers and she had a very difficult time. We also worked on rounding, and she did okay. She had a little bit of difficulty figuring out what 2 numbers a number was in between, but once she figured that out she knew which way to round it. She did much better when we used a number line and drew it out. She then did her reading homework, and completed the 1st book that we started together. We ended the day with her drawing a picture and writing down ideas she had for her new story we are starting. The topic of this story is one thing that you are great at, and she has chosen to write about swimming.

Today we did word problems involving addition/subtraction with 3-4 digit numbers. The student did very well and showed a lot of improvement. He made a few small mistakes that can be fixed by teaching him to check his answers. He understands the steps to follow and how to follow them. I would still like for him to work on knowing his addition/subtraction facts for 1 digit numbers. This will make his work easier and faster to finish, especially as he learns new concepts. Similarly, in reading, if he practices "sounding it out" or reading phonetically, he will be better able to read words he has not seen before. I also suggest he slow down his reading. It helps if he points to each word as he reads them so he does not skip or add any words. His reading comprehension does not seem to be affected by the way he reads. Though slowing down in this way would help to increase his vocabulary. I notice that he does better when he sees that someone believes in him. He needs confirmation that he knows the concepts. When he is confident and an adult agrees that he should be confident, he is much more willing to work. Even if he doesn't quite understand yet, he will try.
