We went over the student's most recent algebra work. The first section we covered involved how to translate linear graphs into slope-intercept form, as well as how to set up word problems as functions. We also went over function notation and how to find the slope from two points on a graph. We then went over how to put lines into point-slope form. Overall, the student seemed to understand the material very well after the session, and we ended up slightly ahead of the student's current material in her workbook.

We got in a lot of practice factoring. The student was much better at the end of the session. She mixed up some of the rules for working with exponents so I did a little review of those. I think the practice was helpful and she will have an easier time remembering the methods for factoring and the rules for exponents.

During this session, the student and I began reviewing for his midterm next week. His teacher made a list of topics to study, so we went through about half of the topics, mostly focusing on the ones that involved expressions, systems, and inequalities (including graphs). The student has gotten much more confident with simplifying expressions and solving systems. He struggled a bit at the beginning with graphing, sometimes forgetting whether to use dotted or solid lines with inequalities, and where to shade. After going through a few, he was much more successful. He was also sometimes confused when reading inequalities, unsure which side was greater or less than, so we practiced that many times. We will solidify this knowledge next time, and go through the rest of the list.

In the current session with the student we completed the chapter review for unit 2 and completed the approximately 50 problems associated with it. She did really well and I was really impressed. She has enhanced her mastery of using the different combinations of addition and subtraction signs in the polynomials, can easily find the greatest common factor very quickly in the polynomials, can alternate between different concepts to tackle the variety of problems, and her ability to do mental math has improved significantly.
