How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

When it comes time for your student to apply for colleges and universities across the United States, you want them to be competitive and feel confident in their chances of being accepted to their first-choice schools. Scores on the ACT can be a crucial piece in the process of getting accepted into competitive schools. Our educational directors at Varsity Tutors can find you an exceptional ACT tutor in Olathe, KS, who could help your student discover and realize their potential on the exam.

The ACT can be a real challenge. It is 3.5 hours long, and it covers math, science, reading, and writing. It is multiple choice, but without excellent time management skills, it can be difficult to answer all the questions on the test within the allotted time. These factors mean that your student could need an organized study approach. For many, however, the idea of setting aside time for test prep in schedules already busy with homework, part-time jobs, class, and friends, isn't very enticing. With a professional tutor, test prep can be anything but boring. A skilled ACT tutor in Olathe will take your student's interests into account to create engrossing study sessions that keep them focused and engaged the entire time.

Olathe, KS ACT tutoring
The student and I worked on more math. He's definitely picking up on more of the material, improving his score a bit each time we meet. He had a Problem of the Week page for math, so we went over some of the homework that he didn't get (covering completing the squares) and then applied it to more difficult applications on the worksheet. We also talked about some big-picture goals as he doesn't seem very motivated to do well in some of his classes.

Initial session - we covered her goals and the difference between the ACT and SAT. Since she's taking them both, but the ACT first, we focused on that this session. I had her try some ACT questions from the English and Math sections which went very well. We also discussed the essay section.

Today was all about ACT Reading. We used some passage comparison questions (which were somewhat difficult to get through) and established some strategies for reading passages that were hard to understand at first glance. These include paraphrasing/summarizing main ideas and paragraphs in your own words as you go along. Further, we looked at the chronological trend of questions asked about a passage and used this strategy to help us locate support for answers to passage based questions. Extra practice was assigned out of Level B in the Critical Reading section of the practice bank for next time.
