We continued working on placement exam practice test 5. On section 4 the student missed four questions. We moved on to section 5 (language). She missed a substantial portion of the questions. However, when we reviewed each of them, she was very quick to understand the answers, and knew many of the answers once she realized her mistake.

We focused primarily on the reading section of the exam, by discussing main idea/ argument as well as identifying key parts of the passage. We practiced using context clues to discover the meaning of unfamiliar words as well. Overall, the student did better on this section--she got 100% on the second practice quiz. We also practiced for the verbal section, and spent some time working on vocabulary. Her homework is to practice vocabulary as much as possible before the exam.

One of the areas in which the student did not exceed an average ranking in this test was analysis and comprehension of informational text. The program he's working on has several exercises for him to do in order to better develop these skills, as they don't develop on their own without guidance. He will work on more of these exercises on his own next week.

Today, we did some more practice on the Math sections so that the student could work on his timing. He has no problem answering all the questions correctly when not timed, and he has a great grasp of all of the right strategies, so at this point it's just a matter of getting comfortable with the timer running. I gave him another practice math section to do for homework, timed, just to get used to it.

Tonight we worked on some verbal concepts to prepare for the test. We used the review book and went over chapters 6-9 and discussed tips to use and completed one exercise from each section. The student completed a timed verbal portion, which he completed with 2 minutes to spare in the time. We reviewed his work, and he completed the section with 73% accuracy. I noticed he was still struggling with questions like "what does not belong" and we used the online platform to practice a few more of those questions and review comparison strategies. He was doing much better by the end of the session.

We covered the math portion of the assessment exam. Specifically, we covered one-step equations, two-step equations, and fractions. The student showed great improvement today when it came to multiplying and dividing fractions. The only area where he struggled a little was with two-step equations. I told him to review the rules of performing arithmetic with negative numbers and also try to practice additional problems in his workbook. We will resume next Saturday with reading and verbal practice.
