In today's session we continued or discussion on money and banking. The student and I started to research the different papers for his upcoming Microeconomics research paper. We established that any sort of excise tax on alcoholic beverages would have to take the different elasticities of the beverages into account (ex. wine is more income elastic than beer, etc.).

The student and I worked one topics to be covered on her midterm including elasticity of demand, marginal utility, multiple cost inputs, and maximizing utility with purchase and production decisions. We talked through these topics while reviewing a prior test that the instructor released with some answers and commentary. I encouraged her to continue to work problems from that example test for the next couple of days before her midterm, as many of those questions should be similar to what she sees on her test. I think she is starting to really understand the material and the logical relationships in economics graphs. If she continues to practice she should do great in the class.

We mostly spent the time in session talking about elasticity of demand, supply and demand equilibria both in mathematical and graphical form, and other concepts with regard to changing supply and demand due to different effects. We also talked about budget graphs, price ceilings, and price floors. I think the student understands mostly everything over what we covered. If anything, there was just a disconnect between what she already knew and the way in which the material was being presented. It is my hope that talking things over with her and visually mapping things out has helped connect some dots that will transfer over to test time. She has a very positive attitude, and I have no doubt she is more than capable to do extremely well on her test. We will be going over her next quiz on Sunday. I will be reviewing it beforehand to get an idea of where we need to go to best use the time. I'm looking forward to our next session.

During this session, we covered comparative advantage and the benefits of trade. We also covered demand and supply curves, equilibrium price and quantity, and taxes and subsidies and how to graph them. The student was struggling with graphing consumer and producer surplus and deadweight loss. The student had a positive attitude towards learning and understood the material once we had talked through it. We used the strategy of defining difficult concepts (like consumer and producer surplus) and practiced applying those definitions in multiple contexts.
