Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At this session, I continued working with the student on the multiple choice writing section, in which one reads a passage and corrects grammatical errors or rewrites for clarity. We discussed the fact that choosing the "best" answer, where more than one possible answer is grammatically correct, is a subjective task, and that she must be aware of the perspective of the writers of the test: they are looking for clear, precise, formal standard English. We then worked on another essay. She once again quickly was able to come up with a position on the question and write an essay on the topic within the time allotted (25 minutes). I believe she needs to work more on her vocabulary, grammar, and use of formal standard English, in order to make her ideas understood. We will work more on editing her writing in future sessions. We also watched part of a video simulation of the test, since she has never taken it. For next week, I assigned her to take a multiple choice writing section of a practice test while timing herself. She should have the exact pages written down, however any writing section of a practice test in the book will do. She should set a timer while taking it, and correct the answers afterwards, so that we can focus on the questions she needs help with at our next session. It would be helpful if she also writes another essay from one of the practice tests while timing herself; however it would also be helpful for her to edit her own essay which she wrote at our last session, so that I can see if she is able to come up with more clear and formal ways of expressing her ideas on her own if given more time. Also, she should already have ordered a set of vocabulary flashcards to help her study."
"Practiced in the critical reading and writing sections in the front of the college book. We also went over some math practice."
"We went over some reading and writing sections. I was happy to see that he had marked up the passages before answering. Overall I think the student is getting better at justifying his answers which helps to make sure he gets them correct."
