Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Novato, CA Latin tutoring
We review regular verbs end in -AR and added the ones in -ER and -IR. We also learned numbers up to 100. The student's problem is mainly the attitude towards the theory, but she responds better to exercises and games. Her homework was well done. I left her with extra practice so she expands her vocabulary and practices regular verbs end in -ER and -IR.

The student is improving. Yesterday we went over her vocab list of clothes and shopping for the third time. She's starting to remember most of the words, which is good to see. We had a short conversation in preparation for her oral exam next week. She did relatively well, and I think she may actually be more of an auditory learner. At the end of the session I quizzed her on some of the vocabulary and there were only a few words she didn't know. Overall I think this was our best session yet.

We covered subjunctive versus indicative, expressions of frequency, and direct and indirect object pronouns. These are concepts that the student will be tested on during his final exam on Tuesday. We worked through a review packet that his teacher provided and made steady progress. The student's attitude was more focused and more optimistic this time. I designed a lesson that broke the information down into smaller, more manageable chunks, and reiterated important concepts and lessons. The student also participated a lot reading, writing, taking notes, and directing the session based on his needs. He must study for his final exam as further review.

The student and I completed Lesson 13 today. We began with a warm-up conversation where we talked about various topics, and I provided corrections when necessary. We then moved on to the main lesson and focused on translations. I provided her with varying English phrases and had her provide the Spanish translation. We then used the translations as grammatical points and went over any errors together. We went over the phrasing ?para que? + subjunctive, direct and indirect object pronouns, the differences between poder/alcanzar, and the accidental "se" construction in Spanish for unplanned occurrences. She did very well today, as it has been several weeks since our last session. Her biggest struggle was with double object pronouns and the accidental "se" construction in Spanish. After we did several examples together and went over the parts of speech, she began translating the sentences perfectly.

The student and I got acquainted. I tested his prior knowledge and his learning style. I also gave him some basic greetings and phrases to work on in a worksheet for home, along with animal names. We used animal props that really caught his attention, and I am looking forward to doing stories and songs to help with the language, using props and our imagination.

The student and I had a great session today! She was very focused and is retaining a lot more of the grammar information. As long as she keeps studying over the summer, she will be well prepared for Spanish 3 in the fall!
