Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had an Animal Farm test scheduled for the next day, so we spent our time working on reviewing for the test. He felt pretty confident in his knowledge of the material, with only a few questions he was unsure of. Because the teacher had not graded or reviewed the homework questions for each chapter that he had been given previously, we looked up a few of the questions just to be sure the answer was correct. I reminded him that he has accommodations for taking the test and also reminded him that if he wasn't quite sure of an answer to skip it and come back to it."
"The student had an assignment for U.S. history to analyze and annotate two songs from Hamilton: The Musical. She didn't feel as though she had a good grasp yet of the American Revolution or the reasons for the Boston Tea Party, so on top of breaking down the song lyrics, we also had a long conversation about taxes."
"The student had an assignment to complete, which consisted of a list, several sentences explaining the reason for selecting each item on the list, and a color drawing of the items in the list. The list represents what he would put into his tomb if he were a Pharaoh in Egypt preparing his journey to the afterlife. We completed all but the drawing. He has a good imagination, and the list was not difficult to finish. The sentences showed he understood the purpose of the exercise; it was a personal view, and he seemed to enjoy the creation of the sentences. It was important to keep him on track at times to ensure he completed each set of sentences. We spent time on focus to hasten the process. He will complete the drawing on his own and send it to the teacher via email."
"The student had an incredible day! We spent the whole time summarizing and taking notes on his geography reading. He remained on task and didn't stress too much about the work he had left which allowed us to power through on the assignment and finish it! He was tired and maybe fighting off a cold, but we worked through all that. I'm very impressed with his summary skills--he's very good at picking out what info he needs and truncating it in ways that work for him. We will continue to work on summarizing, but he's already got a good grasp."
"The student had an initial assessment of goals and interests (strengths and needs). We identified subjects of interest/passion versus subject matter that may be potentially interesting but difficult. His reading stamina will be worked on for building stamina and vocabulary. A strong vocabulary will enhance his ability to construct and deliver a great speech. He has an assignment due next session which will address research, identifying sources, pro/cons, and creating an interesting title for the topic of his interest. We discussed the bases of an outline for a speech. He demonstrated great ability in connecting ideas, identifying the main idea, and setting expectations. The big win from this session is the student identifying that the key concept behind public speaking is "transferring an idea". He understands the power behind public speaking and why it is a skill necessary for success in business."
"The student had completed his essay except for the conclusion and even discussed it with the teacher. He is going to clarify, and reword various sections, and then email the completed essay to me so I can edit it before he has to turn it in on Wednesday. He really understands the book now and appreciated it. His mom wants me to continue to work with him on English."
