"The student finished the first chapter of a short story he wrote, and presented it to me. He worked on the parts of a story, like the characters, setting and plot. I had him start a diagnostic exam to see his progress. I can monitor him remotely."
"The student first completed her math homework, which consisted of a Venn diagram on quadrilaterals. Then she showed me a new Judy Moody book that she had just gotten, and we read from it. She asked to be quizzed on the continents again, and quickly named all of them. We moved on to her Junie B. Jones book and completed another chapter in it. I asked her what she would do if she found herself all alone in her school like Junie, and she said she'd go to the office and call her mom. She very proudly showed me her new diary and demonstrated how to unlock it. I told her it was a planner also, and she asked what a planner was. I told her it was a calendar on which she could write her appointments and other information she needed to remember. She told me should could name the days of the week in Spanish, and then recited them."
"The student focused on her reading homework. I helped her break down what each question was asking, how to identify where she would find the answers, and give complete answers with supporting detail. I also provided her with flashcards with the vocabulary and definitions of her word list which was covered in the last session."
"The student focused on reading for fluency and accuracy, I still monitored comprehension in each story. His reading is a bit slower and choppier than it should be. He often has to pause in order to decode words, however, he is great with correcting himself and was always able to decode the words on his own. His global reading, use of context to decode, is solid but when faced with words on their own he struggles to decode multiple syllables without assistance. We will continue, next week, to focus on practicing fluent reading and automatic decoding. We will also add in more work with higher level affix identification to help with his decoding skills."
"The student focused today on an assignment from her English class. We read together through an article she'd been assigned and discussed vocabulary in it that was new to her. We also practiced English by discussing the article itself."
"The student got a 92% on the quiz we prepared for during the previous session! During today's session we mostly focused on grammar. He has a natural understanding of the grammatical structure, but struggles to articulate the functions of parts of speech in context. We plan to continue working on grammar next week. We also went over the requirements for his English class, and I spent time gathering information on the teaching style of his professor. We also discussed how to gain clarity from his teacher on certain assignments. I asked him to prepare an outline for his paper due on Monday. We will work on the paper together during our next session."
