"Today's focus was on grammar, as the student's mom asked the English teacher for a heads-up on their final and she sent over pages of grammar exercises for her to engage with. We set about extracting all the components set forth: appositive phrase, present participle phrase, past participle phrase, gerund phrase, independent clause, complex sentence, compound sentence, compound-complex sentence, etc. We went about defining these. I asked her to define the many components for me in her own words and had her support the definitions she pieced together by finding examples of each from a passage in a non-fiction book. After talking through all the relevant definitions, we then talked about strategy for taking these definitions beyond the page. We talked about hands-on, dynamic strategies she can implement to make learning grammar less daunting. Ultimately, she agreed that putting all the terms on individual index cards could help with understanding how to move parts of compound-complex sentences around or to put select pieces together in light of the formula or directions set forth. To complement this, she is also going to put together a cheat sheet of sorts, containing boxes of examples of subordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs, and so on."
"This was our first session. The student's mom left out some assignments from all his subjects. I discussed with him a science writing assignment and we reviewed his math homework. He also has a vocabulary exam tomorrow, so we reviewed that material as well. I am going to look for some books for him for our next meeting (he likes a graphic novel called bones and captain underpants)."
"The student is preparing for his English and algebra finals. In English, we went over sentence diagramming. In algebra, we reviewed some pre - trigonometry. We had an excellent session."
"The student is working hard to strengthen her counter arguments and arguments to make a better paper. She is working on incorporating the right quotes right now too. We have planned all our sessions until the end of her semester."
"The student and I talked about the book she is reading: "The War that Saved My Life," and then we read some poems. She wrote one about February, her birthday month. After that, we worked on a review of fractions. The student loves fractions."
"During this session, I helped the student edit and revise his reading packet that was due to be handed in tomorrow. I had the student add examples from the text and explanations to his answers on the essay questions. He also made editing corrections to the answers he had written, including spelling, punctuation, and capitalization."
