"I began the session with quizzing the student on some of the vocabulary flash cards that he has been making. He knew the definitions for a few of them, but needs to look at the rest of them a few more times to help him get those memorized as well. I showed him the way I studied from flash cards in the past, basically by putting the known cards in one pile and the unknown cards in another, then going through the unknown pile enough times until he has learned all of them. We worked on some grammar questions after that. The essay he had written was okay. He hadn't gotten a chance to do some of the homework I had given him, which was to lengthen some given sentences by thinking of details to add to them. I therefore gave him homework of the same assignment again. I told him how much learning to add more details to his writing will help him all around, not just on the SAT, and that he should definitely finish writing those sentences first before he begins working on the rest of his SAT homework."
"We started with a 15-minute writing practice section. These were all improving sentences questions. She got 5 correct out of 14 problems, and was not able to finish the last two. We did some practice questions after the timed test that she did a little better on. She missed one on parallelism. We then went through a reading section, focusing on marking the passage. We also talked about different strategies for attacking this section, when to read the passage first and when to try some questions first. She is very good at analyzing passages. I think she could just work on her speed a little bit in answering the questions. We started to review the essay section of the test prep guide, reading good essays and bad essays, and determining what makes them good or bad. For homework, I would like her to read chapter 17 in the prep guide, making a list of tips and strategies for the grammar questions on the SAT. She should also continue to work on vocabulary and SAT question of the day. She should finish section 6 of test 10 in the exam guide."
"The student and I reviewed the problems she had trouble with from her last practice SAT. We will continue to go over a practice test once a week to fine tune her test taking skills."
