I assisted the student with his SAT prep. After going over the homework, we went over some reading passages together. We also looked at writing and advanced math. Overall, he did a good job. I assigned him some homework to complete before the next session.

I gave her transitions and phrases for comparison/contrast writing and a brief exercise writing thesis statements using these expressions. She did well on this. She looked at two model comparison/contrast essays in block and point by point style with questions on key points and structure of this writing style. This writing style seemed a little unfamiliar to her. For homework, she will do an essay in this style, and complete the homework due from last time.

I had a good session with the student. We finished the Math sections and Writing sections of the SAT diagnostic test book and did part of one of the reading sections. The diagnostic is quite a bit more difficult than the actual test, as far as I can tell; the student did a great job of hanging in there.

I had an excellent session with the student today. We spent most of our session working on math, going over the problems she had done for homework and then working on some new ones. We are continuing to explore problems with polygons, and she is definitely getting the hang of it. She is more confident and does a better job figuring out how to start the problems. At the end of our session, we did a Writing and Language passage, which she did not do as well on as she usually does. I know she is capable of scoring highly on this section, but she needs to pay a little closer attention to the overall flow of the passages. For homework, I'll send her some Reading, some more Writing and Language, and just a tiny bit of math. We need to focus on the Verbal sections for a bit before continuing with the math.

I had another great session with the student. As he had told me that he was having trouble grasping the Krebs cycle during his review this past week, I went over all of the cellular respiration processes with him in decent detail. This overall process has many steps, and I am really encouraging him to continue to review each component to be aware of what the inputs/outputs are at each stage. We also reviewed some cellular structure topics, mitosis/meiosis, and Mendelian genetics. An important strategy that I hope the student can keep working on is to justify why he selects/deselects each answer choice during his practice questions. This will be very useful in his studies to get a more comprehensive view of the subject. He is going to review and do the practice questions for chapters 8, 9, and 10 in the next week. While he is reviewing these 3 chapters, he should also refresh his memory on what we have already covered and start thinking about integrating concepts.

I had assigned the student a full-length practice test before we met today, so our plan for this session was to get through a step-by-step review of all her errors and to determine her current score, both of which we achieved. My analysis of the types of questions the student struggles with most found that she definitely needs to practice analyzing reading passages on the SAT much more effectively and with ease. We will achieve this goal by dissecting SAT reading passages together and learning how to navigate the passage in relation to specific types of questions. We also do need to review some algebra concepts, such as percentage increase and word problems.
