Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

We studied for the student's math midterm. I was overall very impressed with how well he remembered the material. He did need frequent prompting to slow down and remember important lessons. Once we took a second to review, he clicked with the info quickly and was able to solve without too many issues. It will be crucial for him to continue studying and checking practice problems as he works. If he can be patient with himself and work carefully, he could get an A on the exam.

We worked on some online testing problems. I showed him how to use the Work-Kinetic Energy theorem, and then we spent the rest of the session doing force problems. I always enjoy working with him; he is bright and has a fine sense of humor!

I was able to cover the following with the student during this session: went over the homework assignment for chapter 1 exercise 3 in his Latin book, went over grammar in chapters 1 and 2, and went over the vocabulary words in chapters 1 and 2. His attitude was good tonight. He was upbeat and ready to complete his assignment that was due tomorrow. He still struggles a bit with noun declension endings and recognizing subject, direct object, and predicate nouns. We will continue to review these basic constructions.

The student started school this week. For the beginning of our hour, we reviewed what she had learned in class and how she feels about her new teacher's approach. She seemed to grasp the material (place value) well, and said that her new teacher was very attentive and walked her through it. Then we did a quick multiplication warm up to practice her times tables and get back into the swing of doing math. For the remainder of the session, we reviewed material we had done the previous week and expounded upon it. Now, she has pretty much mastered multiplication and division, and is getting the hang of all operations with fractions.

The student's homework was to write a dialog incorporating new Japanese phrases from the last lesson. It was done impeccably, but some sentences sounded unnatural in the Japanese, so we worked on making them sound less "translated." There will be homework for the next lesson, which I will send via email. I am absolutely floored by the progress the student has made. She has learned the amount of grammar it took me about two years to master in about three months.

Today's session with the student consisted of going over homework problems. We completed the remaining portion of yesterday's lesson on using the law of cosines for triangulation word problems, and then we also completed most of the section on computing the area of triangles. We learned to use the general formula for the area of triangles, the sine formula, as well as Heron's formula for areas of triangles, and we applied them to various scenarios. We still encounter some mistakes along the way, but they are for very minor things such as rounding errors or missing one final step in a calculation. Aside from that, he is doing extremely well.
