Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I assisted the student with his SAT prep. We went over his homework, which consisted of math, reading, and writing. He did quite well on the writing and reading sections, but needed extra attention on the math. We went over concepts such as completing the square, the vertex form of a parabola, polynomials, and other topics that he has not yet covered in his math classes that are on the SAT. Overall, he did a great job today!"
"I introduced basic strategies for reading and language portion of the test. We covered reading portion and first few problems of writing portion of first practice test. The student needs to work on her reading comprehension skills, especially when meaning is implied. She does well when the author is direct but not as well with circumspect interpretation. We'll keep at it with the practice tests - I'll assign one per session for her. The more practice she gets at them, the better she'll do with that reading interpretation."
"I meet with the student, and we went over a diagnostic test she had just taken. I recommend that she focus on improving her math score (especially the no-calculator portion). She should also further develop her ability to read and analyze passages quickly. We will continue to work on these issues."
"I met the students for the first time. We discussed the students' strengths and weaknesses on the SAT. They both primarily wanted to focus on math. We went over problems in all three sections. Both were at a similar skill level in all sections. I was able to gauge which specific issues they had in answering questions and guide them in the right direction. For now, the priority is learning the majority of topics in SAT Math. They struggled with answering many of the math questions, so I will use a more lecture-based style next session to teach them some concepts about algebra and quadratic equations."
"I met with the student today to help him get organized and started on his college applications. We discussed his plans, and he said he would like to retake the ACT this fall and be tutored on the Science section in particular, and that he also needed to take two SAT subject tests for his applications, but wasn't sure which would be the best tests to take. We looked at the list of possible tests together and decided he should pick two from: Literature, Biology M, U.S. History, French, or Math 1. We brought up the practice materials on a website and looked over the Literature and Biology M questions. He did very well on the Literature practice problems, so that will be one of his choices; he did fairly well on the Biology M, but could stand to refresh his understanding of some of the material. When we next meet, we will look at the other three subjects to see what their suitability is."
"I prepared a set of problems based on the areas the student wanted to work on. This included graphing, interest, percentages, exponent expressions, and solving systems of equations. We worked briefly on vocab to start the lesson - he is still doing a great job of retaining the words we work on. After completing the practice problems I created for our meeting, we talked briefly about simple vs. compound interest. Then, we spent the last 15 minutes or so going over the practice essay he had written. We mostly discussed strategy when writing the SAT essay, including how to structure the essay, where to spend time, and things to watch out for. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him!"
