Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday we outlined the English equivalents to the commonly-used French verbs. We also worked on sentences that I had left for homework and outlined a number of common questions that you might ask in a work environment, and how one could respond. Next week we will delve more deeply into verb tenses and get to work on building blocks into conversation skills. We will also focus on the vocabulary and grammar of the songs "Ne me quitte pas," by Jacques Brel, and "Je reviens," by Kaolin."
"This was our first tutoring session. We went over review from last year's French class. I had her start the session with conjugating etre, faire, avoir, and aller. We then went over the pronouns y, en, and luer and when to use each one. I challenged her to continue to review in preparation for the beginning of the school year approaching next week."
"We studied for the student's final exam Wednesday. We did several listening activities. She did pretty well with the overall message of what we listened to. Picking out specific words is a bit of a challenge. We read some practice email correspondences for which I had her draft responses. She did well with that. I had her read some brochures on tourism to practice her vocabulary and work on reading comprehension skills. She needs to teach herself how to make educated guesses. Towards the end, she was getting better at this. Her instinct is to rush, which is why she struggles. I told her we would do similar exercises on Tuesday to prepare her for Wednesday. She's preparing herself very well."
"The student was struggling most with past forms of verbs and which helping verbs to use with them. We covered these topics quite generally by looking over a test he had received that day. I plan to go over these topics more in depth at our next meeting. He definitely has the French knowledge he needs for his level. His comprehension skills were excellent. It seems we will just need to specifically focus on the grammar points that he missed."
"We went over work that the student had done in class on the passe compose and the imparfait, and then finished the exercise. After doing work on that, we worked on different verbs and their conjugations. We then worked on a translation of the reading which she struggled on a little bit. She did well and what she is doing only comes with practice and repetition of doing similar exercises, so I believe she is making progress."
"We worked on grammar. We also had a conversation in French to test the student's level of comprehension and speech. He did well."
