Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered DNA transcription, translation, and replication. We had a heavy focus on mitosis, particularly with DNA replication. We looked at the difference between leading and lagging strands, and identified what okazaki fragments are. We also identified what the function of the polymerase and helicase enzymes are. Lastly, we discussed strategies for the exam and how to best prepare for it. The student had an excellent attitude towards the material and session. She seemed to struggle with DNA replication, but as the session went forward she developed a better understanding of the process."
"The student and I met for the first time to discuss his expectations for tutoring and our strategy to address the material. He explained that the instructor for his biology course is not known for explaining topics very well, so he would like his tutor to explain concepts and material that was not thoroughly covered in class. He may also need assistance studying for exams. We came up with a study plan to help him stay up with the reading material. I recommended that he take notes as he went over the assigned chapters in his textbook so that he can review his notes to help him study for exams. We then read the chapters that were assigned for this week and I answered his questions as we went along. For next week, he'll do the assigned reading before our tutoring sessions and bring any questions he may have on the material."
"The student did great in our first session. We reviewed the questions she got wrong on her recent vocabulary quiz and discussed study methods and test taking strategies. She seems to have the most trouble in understanding how terms/ ideas relate to each other to form more complex concepts. We also set goals for her class and talked about how to achieve them -- organization, time management, and different study methods to help with memorization. We reviewed additional material (macromolecules) not covered on her quiz and made a plan for our next session. She agreed that using a weekday session for homework help and a weekend session to study/ review was a good idea. I'm looking forward to working with her more."
"Good first session. We covered organic macromolecules at the student's request. We are scheduled again Monday."
"We continued our coverage of topics for the next test with a particular emphasis on the chemistry concepts. This included definitions of atoms, compounds, and molecules as well as the differences between chemical formulas and chemical equations. We also reviewed classification and cell structure."
"We covered pH, specific heat, heat of vaporization, and buffers. The student is ready for her quiz this week and we have made a plan for next week to get her ready for her exam in 2 weeks."
