Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked mostly on understanding and solving algebraic equations. We finished up with a biology review of the difference between mitosis and meiosis."
"The student and I began the session reviewing the letter A. We reviewed the Letter A book and identified words that began with A. Then, using play dough, I had the student make an uppercase A and fill in a large A with play dough. I also had an uppercase letter that he filled with stickers. We used the color of the stickers to review red, yellow, and blue. Then I had the student sort animal pasta into four bowls. We glued the pasta onto a large A. Then we worked on counting. I had 5 cups with the numbers 1-5 written on them. For each corresponding number, he had to put that many craft sticks into the cup. We finished the session by using an online learning tool to review numbers 1-5 and to work on the letter A. The student was more focused today, and we were able to get a lot accomplished."
"Today the student practiced solving systems of equations by substituting. He did four practice problems and remembered how to do these problems with ease. We then went on to do science. He completed one page of electron arrangement practice. He then started to work on his building project. We then focused on math for a bit. Overall it was a very productive session."
"We completed the student's math homework and went over key concepts he was tested on today. He seemed a little unsure on percents, but just depending on the wording of the problem. We will continue to practice this. At the end of our session, we had time to work on his lines for A Midsummer Night's Dream and I showed him a memorization technique that works well for me!"
"We spent most of the time working on an essay on the Articles of the Confederation. We started from the research phase using the textbook and the worksheet his teacher gave him. We then worked on brainstorming and paragraph structure. I will continue to work with him on his self esteem around writing. He is really bright and has a lot of ideas; we just need to work on getting them onto paper."
"Last night, we spent most of the session completing a review of a packet assigned in science class. The packet covered the formation of the three types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. It asked questions about fossils and aging rocks and was fairly in-depth about the actual formation process. This took over an hour to complete. We also finished a review of a worksheet for social studies comparing American government to Roman government. After finishing both worksheets, we began preparing for the student's tests in math and vocab. She has several online resources to study the material and we reviewed them until she felt comfortable. We also reviewed the results of her tests, which she did fairly well on. They will be covered in more detail in a meeting next week, along with recommendations for accommodations."
