Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session was focused again on thermodynamics and thermochemistry in preparation of the students' exam that was postponed until this upcoming week. They found a sample exam covering the appropriate material that we worked through together to test their knowledge of concepts. I helped clarify a few things about specific heat vs heat capacity of substances early on as a part of a series of thermochemistry questions. We then primarily focused on thermodynamics and using Hess' Law in combination with standard free energy and enthalpy changes of reactions to find the enthalpy/free energy of formation for various species involved in the reactions given. Both students seem to have a good conceptual understanding. I feel confident they will do well on their exam."
"Today we covered reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, diols and epoxides. The student is studying very hard for organic and is improving. She is getting the hang of it!"
"I worked with the student for the first time with his review homework on projectile motion in preparation for his make-up exam tomorrow. I think he seems to understand the basics of the physics material. I helped him go through the problems and told him to always write down all variables in two columns to keep the horizontal and vertical variables straight, and he seemed to do well on the problems once he did that. I think he can do well on the test tomorrow and some more practice will help for the future."
"We went over questions on a quiz to help her prepare for her exam on Friday. We covered all types of chemical equilibrium. We did both conceptual problems and calculations. We talked through some test-taking strategies based on the types of questions on the quiz."
"We went over reaction forces, and forces on bodies for trusses and frames in this session. The student understands the concepts of setting up sum of forces and moments, however he had some struggles with the mathematical aspect of the problem solving process. We went over complex frame and truss problems to improve his confidence."
"We went over solubility rules and dissociation reactions of substances in water. The student needed a review of solubility rules but got the hang of them. We went over several problems. Together, we managed to get most of them. She was getting the hang of the material."
