Today I met with the student to work on the ACT in preparation for tomorrow's test. We started with ACT English. I had found a practice test online, so we worked through that. She is still quick at answering the problems, but she also does very well, this time only answering 1 incorrectly. We then moved on to math. I pointed out some problems that I thought she may not have seen before (that is, the sorts of problems that few high school students have seen before because they're not covered in the common curriculum) and we found that some of the material was, in fact, new. I explained a few nice short-cuts for solving time-consuming counting problems and we moved on to the essay. Our coverage of the essay was simple. We brainstormed a prompt, working through the overall logic of formulating an argument. - develop a stance, determine specific points, create a thesis, and refer back to the thesis. I took this opportunity to discuss formal logic in developing an argument. She had a pretty solid intuitive understanding of how to apply this logic. I frankly think that she is going to do exceptionally well on the ACT. The only thing she has to look out for is taking her time with the English section and she'll be looking at a score in the high 30's.
