Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, the student worked on his spelling words. He was really glad he made 100% both times he took his practice quiz during tutoring. Good job! He then filled in his spelling words correctly to match the definition, and he worked on X and more PEMDAS. He completed one math problem he had for homework, and he wants to work on more X in tomorrow's session and PEMDAS without division. The student also enjoyed telling and showing me the gold galleons he got from the tooth fairy. :-)"
"It was an absolute pleasure meeting this student and her grandparents today. In terms of the session, we went over division and multiplication, and fractions, both improper and whole number. We also touched on how to turn the remainder of a quotient into a fraction and decimals. She is very receptive, likable, and quite ambitious, which I enjoyed seeing for myself."
"It was great to finally meet the student! In our first meeting we reviewed reading and math tests with grades of C or lower. The main problem I see is that she misses important key words that would help her give the correct answer, in both subjects. She has a lot of energy. We will work on learning to focus, fundamental math facts, and reading questions carefully. I will do a reading and a math assessment to find out exactly what concepts she still needs to learn in order to get better grades."
"Length and width of rectangles. The student is an avid student who stumbles over herself a little due to her language filter. As is not uncommon with perfectionists, she becomes very anxious when making mistakes or misinterpreting information. She is a joy to work with. More recently, we have looked at her story writing, which is highly expressive with descriptions but hampered, obviously, when it comes to action, which is a little more complicated grammatically. To write better, she will benefit from our focusing on English verb agreement, tense and voice. This should also help when she must perform independently in a test writing situation."
"Meeting the student today was a treat. We spent our time getting to know one another a little bit, working our way through his vocabulary and math homework assignments, and (of course) taking a quick drum-break in the basement to get refocused. He is truly an auditory learner; understanding a concept or a question off of a page may take him a little extra time, while hearing allows him to process things much quicker. This became especially clear during our drum break: in a matter of literally seconds, he was able to both intuit and play along with a rhythm I was playing...pretty incredible, if you ask me. Going forward we will be building a speech-learning gaming platform into our weekly meetings, making routine of good study habits, knocking out his homework assignments, and building up his confidence...really excited to be working with him!"
"Met with my student today and he had a list of 12 spelling words that I quizzed him on. He also had a math assignment that was a review of regrouping and adding 4-digit numbers. I reviewed that assignment and when I found incorrect answers, we talked about it and he corrected his work. I also had gotten a book from the library - a Spanish rendition of The Three Little Pigs that we took turns reading. The book had both English and Spanish text on each page.."
