Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was focused on working with the student through a handout assigned in class. The assignment dealt with concepts with which the student had expressed some difficulty on his recent unit exam and covered forms of function representation for both equations and inequalities (point-slope, slope-intercept, standard form), as well as solving for their points of intersection and graphing the results. While the student was familiar with the various forms and was able to solve the problems using them once reminded of the correct operating procedure, it was less clear to him what the procedure and the results actually signified. Practical explanations were provided, with real-world examples of the various problem situations. Discussion included the practical significance of using inequality functions of various kinds to solve problems involving basic linear limiting conditions."
"This was our first meeting. In talking with the student, she stated that she would like help with homework first, and then in areas she is struggling. We began with working on her assignment dealing with discrete and continuous graphs. After that, she said she was having difficulty with linear equations and which formula to use. As we were solving linear equations it came out that she didn't quite understand what exactly to do when solving equations. We will be working on solving equations, and I will be sending some equations that she can work with."
"This was our first session. We began by completing the practice test on linear equations and their forms. The student understood the material and was only making computational mistakes, such as missing negatives or miscalculations with operations. The practice test did not seem to provide a challenge for him, which is a positive sign. This being the case, he asked his teacher for harder material the previous week and received a worksheet on the quadratic equation. After understanding what the equation solved for, he began to grasp this advanced concept which will be covered next semester."
"This was our first tutoring session, and it was a very positive one. The student and I worked on her test review sheet, and she completed an assignment covering arithmetic and geometric sequences. She said she had a hard time understanding the material, but she was able to complete almost every question correctly on her own. I encouraged her, and told her how she really did know how to do this stuff, and helped to make her feel confident in her abilities. This was a very successful tutoring session, and I believe she left it feeling positive about the test she was taking on Friday."
"This was the day before the test, so it was another session where only the odd-numbered problems were assigned. Problems of note today we on proportion, area, and using the Distributive Property for simplification and as part of finding the solution to an equation."
"This week our concepts included the distributive property, combining like terms, and solving equations. The student has been doing well on this material this week, and she understands and is showing improvement with staying focused and solving problems! With continued support and reminders that she can earn a good grade in math this year, I think she will do better!"
