"Tonight we started working in calculus. We covered limits and instantaneous rates of change from a conceptual perspective as well as solving limits algebraically and understanding right and left sided limits and what they meant with respect to if a limit exists or not. Overall, I primarily explained the notation and how to go ahead and solve the limits algebraically, explaining how to use algebra to cancel and simplify equations making them solvable from indeterminate form. I then introduced the concept of instantaneous rates and derivatives and how the equation was evaluating the slope of the line between two points as the two points came infinitesimally close to one another. Overall, after quickly reviewing the concepts, the student had little to no trouble working through example problems on his own at the end of the session, and I led him into the next sections on continuity, which we likely review in more detail next session."
