"Today we made another editing pass on the paper, based on another read-through of the paper that I did in advance. We ended up fixing some more minor issues of grammar and style and reworking some sentences that didn't flow all that well or that were a bit too colloquial in their language. We also did some work on his engagement with secondary sources, bringing in an additional source and replacing one quote with another that provided some insightful commentary instead of plot summary."
"We went over the first five chapters in HG Wells' The Invisible Man. There are many very important themes, especially one that the student pointed out--there is no hero in the novel. The "stranger" Is not nice, and we do not root for him even though he is the focus of the whole novel. Then we looked at how the student fixed up her essay on Marianne from Sense and Sensibility. She wrote a very good paragraph that showed that Marianne created sadness around her by her self-obsessed ways. However, she did not go back to the introduction to change her "structuring statement" to include the fact that she had added another element to her essay and she did not expand on the conclusion. For next week, we are going to read chapters 6-10 in The Invisible Man, and she is to write an essay on how it is that Wells brings the reader to really want to continue reading the book even though the hero is not a hero."
"The student was a very enthusiastic and productive student today! We worked on lesson 8 from her vocabulary book, continuing from last session and focusing especially on the passage and passage questions. The student did a great job of slowing her reading pace, pausing to ask questions when she didn't understand the meaning of a word or phrase, and describing the content in her own words. After we carefully read through the passage together and discussed her questions, the student appeared to have excellent comprehension of the material. She needed some help answering the passage questions, and we worked on improving her sentences for correct grammar and phrasing (usually tense issues), but overall she was confident and correct. She plans to finish the passage questions on her own and we can review her answers together next week."
