We continued working on linear equations, this time covering midpoints and distance. When we discussed the concept behind them, the student quickly realized that the distance formula comes from the Pythagorean Theorem. Apart from a handful of minor mistakes, she had no problem completing problems that applied the formulas we covered. We reviewed functions of nouns briefly before taking a closer look at subject-verb agreement and subjective vs. objective pronouns. The student did well with the grammar and only had some initial confusion over subjective and objective pronouns.

Today the student and I worked on the Reading and Writing/ Language Arts section of the SAT. She did very well on both sections, leading me to believe that she is getting more and more comfortable with the material. She was not stumped by many questions, and she was able to realize where she went wrong the majority of the time. We will continue to work on improving her ability and confidence with the SAT.

We covered the writing section in Practice Test 2. The homework is for the student to create an outline "cheat sheet" of important concepts to remember from the notes and resources provided. In addition, for next time, I've asked him to complete Practice Test 3 using the outline, and noting what every single question is about (punctuation, parallelism, redundancy, transitions, etc.).

We reviewed algebra concepts by doing a practice test together. There are some concepts related to reducing equations/ fractions that the student was unclear on, but I get the feeling he either hasn't had some of this material or hasn't seen it in a while. We will continue to work on this. We also need to work on forming equations from word problems, but this should improve with practice. I'd like him to become more comfortable doing some arithmetic mentally in order to save time (especially when the answer can be checked later by plugging in). He'll get a better feel for when this is appropriate as he does more practice problems.

The student and I did a practice grid-in section (10 problems) of increasing difficulty. It took almost 1.5 hours to complete and talk through the problems, and re-do ones that were challenging the first time around. We finished the session with some problems involving algebraic fractions.
