Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student needed help studying for her biology final, so we went through some of the questions from her study guide. She seemed pretty confident with the material. I was impressed with how well she could make Punnett squares."
"Today we went through the AP bio FRQ section, which included topics on chromosome structure, cell replication, genetic diversity and immune response. We also went through how to analyze a pedigree for autosomal and x-linked traits."
"The pupil and I spent this session studying for her science test on acid-base interactions and phase changes. She had a few questions about how to write neutralization reactions, so we went over this process, and I provided her with additional practice problems. We also discussed phase-change diagrams. She had a great understanding of how phase changes work but struggled a little putting the concepts into graphical form. In order to help her with this, we discussed an example from her review packet, and I had her draw her own diagram using water as the specific compound. We also reviewed vocabulary she needed to know for the test."
"The student and I got to know each other and did a simple experiment with cornstarch and water. Next week we're going to explore the River Des Peres!"
"This was the last session before the student takes her Math, Social Studies and Science final exams tomorrow. We reviewed all of her science vocabulary words from the entire semester using flash cards. She can name the term being described, and she can recite all of the definitions if given the term. I also quizzed her on her Social Studies review (U.S. History: Washington Era to Reconstruction) using open-ended short answer questions and fill-in-the-blank questions. She knows her material well, and she said that she feels confident going into her three finals tomorrow."
"Initially, we discussed polar, non-polar, and amphipathic molecules and what makes them so. We then started working on rate law and quantitative analysis today. I gave the student a number of rate law problems, and she seemed to do quite well. As always, she is a pleasure to work with. She is to acquaint herself with Michaelis-Menten mechanics for next week."
