Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight, I worked on estimating sums and differences with Student 1. She struggled through rounding, but I feel like she made some good progress. I think this is a skill that will help her with her confidence in number sense. With Student 2, we worked on his writing prompt. His ideas were great - he said he took them from a book and made them his own - which is an awesome skill to have. I saw a lot of spelling progression. We talked a lot about compound sentences and needing a comma before the conjunction. With Student 3, we worked on word problems with the initial value unknown or the change unknown. A lot of second and third graders struggle with this skill, because some teachers only teach the sum or difference as the unknown. To solve this it's all about the practice :)"
"We are beginning the review for the student's test. We worked on grammar; mostly commas, semicolons, and colons, and talked about problems for next time to redo and look at in terms of clause structure and where pausing seems natural."
"We are covering operations with fractions including addition, subtraction and multiplication. The student maintains a positive attitude and interest in the subject. We want to investigate latitude and longitude. I will bring a map with the United States that is labeled with these lines. He increased his speed with multiplication. I left him with homework for tonight, Wednesday and Thursday. I will return on Friday."
"We are starting to get the student prepared for the upcoming year. Using the textbook, we covered the conceptual foundations of algebra, including vocabulary such as terms, constants, variables, and coefficients. We retouched dealing with negative numbers and substitution using parenthesis. I told him to study the vocab for our next session."
"We completed most of the real number system. We will do the drill during our next session. She is interested in a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, so we will be spending a little more time on the underlying theory as an aid to understanding, memory, and application."
"We continued a review of factoring and graphing. The uncompleted portion of the homework was reassigned, along with additional questions. Since the Accuplacer test will be taken in mid August, I recommended that we double up on the sessions until then."
