Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has to take an online quiz on material they haven't covered in class, so we worked through several practice problems to make sure she knew how to use the formulas. The practice quizzes both had the same types of questions on them, so I think the real quiz will have something very similar. I walked her through the first practice then had her do the second on her own and confirmed her answers."
"The students have their chemistry final tomorrow. They wanted help going over their review. They went through their review package and wanted to focus on the aspects that they felt they needed help with. Student A wanted to work on dimensional analysis, sig figs, and scientific notation. Student B wanted to focus on sig figs, scientific notation, and concepts of pressure/volume/temperature in regards to gas laws. He really looked like he started to understand dimensional analysis. I wish them luck on their final."
"The topics that were covered were bonding and naming. Note-taking was also analyzed. The topic would be explained while the student took notes. The student was then asked questions and could only use his notes to answer them. He was able to take good notes when told to, but he does not automatically pursue note-taking when listening to a lecture. That is a skill we will try to enhance in our next sessions."
"This session covered ions, ionic bonds, valence electrons, and nuclear chemistry. The student's attitude towards the work was good."
"This session covered precipitation reactions and acid-base reactions, with a focus on balancing equations and writing half reactions. It was review for the student's quiz tomorrow. Otherwise, we briefly discussed oxidation-reduction reactions."
"This session was divided into two parts. In the first part, Student 1 and I studied Chemistry, as he had a Chemistry quiz on Friday. We focused on the study guide given to him by his teacher. The study guide focused mostly on the periodic table, and he seemed quite comfortable with all of the practice questions assigned. In the second part, Student 2 and I started with his Chemistry homework and then worked on his Math homework. He was comfortable with both after explanations."
