Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed basic 4 function calculation, including adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing. I then retaught scientific notation. We then reviewed exponents and the negative exponent for fractions."
"We reviewed the procedures for calculations with fractions. For example, to add or subtract fractions, you need a common denominator. We reviewed word problems with GCF and LCM from last session. We also previewed her book, introducing concepts like perfect square. She continues to do well, and has a good understanding of most of the material."
"We reviewed the student's math homework. We read together from the book, On Writing by Stephen King. He also read a science article and a language arts article from the reading program. He completed several sections of language arts and writing skills from his textbook. We finished by reading together from the novel Captains Courageous."
"We spent all of the session on graphs for algebra II, because the student was having trouble with shifts and transformations and couldn't solve them without plugging in values and graphing them. We worked on being able to identify slope, vertex, horizontal and vertical shifts, and axis of symmetry just by looking at the equation, and he was able to do it by the end and felt confident he could finish the few problems left by himself."
"We spent most of the session on math, doing word problems from the student's workbook that covered addition and subtraction. We checked some problems that she had already completed, and I had her explain to me how she figured out each problem and what words provided clues as to which operation would be needed. She used a highlighter to highlight the clues, and she did very well. I also created a bonus problem that was a little more difficult than the workbook. I assigned a couple of pages for homework as well. For the last 15 minutes, we went over some passages for reading comprehension - she would read a paragraph out loud, and then I would quiz her verbally to see what she retained. Overall, it was a great session."
"We spent most of the time working on logarithms and logarithmic functions (including rules of exponents). We also began "A Gentle Introduction To Learning Calculus" online. I will send the student a comprehensive worksheet review of logarithmic functions with answers."
