Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Newton, MA Writing tutoring
In this session, the student and I went over some feedback he received from his teacher on a recent essay. We talked about how to make sentences clearer and how to stay focused on answering a question directly and clearly. I had him spend ten minutes writing a short essay to test his ability to construct clear, straightforward sentences. His essay started off nicely, so we will work through the Kerrigan method of writing in a workbook. For our next meeting, he will write a short essay to reflect the skills he is practicing in Kerrigan.

During this session the student worked on completing a short essay he had begun prior to the first session on the subject of snowboarder Shaun White's disappointing performance at the Olympics. He drafted a second body paragraph prior to the session, and we edited his work during the session. He then drafted a conclusion during the session with my assistance. We then went back through the entire essay together. He seemed to have worked hard on the work he did prior to class, showing more polished writing. I will continue to provide him with exercises to assist him in learning about essay construction and writing mechanics.

The student had a couple writing assignments he worked on. The first was reading a short article, summarizing it, and writing how it related to his own life. He is better understanding structure and teacher expectations of his writing, which I believe is helping him write more effectively. His reading comprehension is good, so these kinds of assignments are easier than others. He also worked on a writing assignment for social studies. I showed him how he had writing assignments for two classes that weren't English, demonstrating how writing is an important skill for all subjects, and that English exists outside of class and books.

Today marked our first session tackling content in writing. Specifically, we discussed the importance of idea organization, personal tone and audience. I plan to review the concepts of content in writing during our next session, then have him do as much editing as possible for BOTH content and grammar.

Yesterday was my first session with this student. We worked mainly on an open note science quiz. I also edited a paper for her leadership class. The paper had some grammatical errors, and some parts needed to be re-written, but she was fully aware of that. I am looking forward to working with this student more!
