Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Newton, MA MCAT tutoring
This was our first session. We first discussed the student's general concerns about the test and his current approach and past approaches that he had tried. To get a better sense of his current approach, the student went through a practice passage out loud, explaining his reasoning as he answered the questions. We determined that his most pressing issue is that he is not really digesting the passage as he reads it. Rather, he quickly reads the passage and must constantly refer back to it while answering the questions. I suggested some ways to remedy the problem and we tried a couple of passages with the new approach. I assigned some homework to practice the new approach. Though other smaller issues likely still exist, I think the his primary obstacle was identified and I am optimistic that we can raise his score.

Newton, MA MCAT tutoring
This was our last session. We went through passages together and I helped her with her approach to questions. From the last session she seemed to really improve. She reported that when she was doing practice problems on her own she felt much more confident with it and was consistently getting more right.

We discussed subatomic particles, isotopes, and nuclear reactions, specifically how to apply the mass-energy equivalence formula. We discussed the Bohr model and the photoelectric effect in terms of Work and Voltage. We defined an electron-Volt as a unit of energy commonly used for subatomic particles. We then discussed the Quantum Model of the atom, including the Pauli Exclusion Principle, the Aufbau Principle, and Hund's Rule. We discussed spectroscopic notation and how Hund's Rule explains the existence and behavior of transition metals. The student pre-read for our session today, and the results showed. I used her preparation to focus on how to approach the problems, and the higher-level connections that are often skipped by review courses that don't emphasize the fundamental physical concepts that determine subatomic movements. We will discuss periodic trends and bonding the next time.

Newton, MA MCAT tutoring
I gathered background information about the student's different strengths and weaknesses, what major, and what she needs most from these tutoring sessions. She let me know that CARS is one of her weakest sections, and she will also need support in chemistry as well. She is a biochemistry major, and since biochemistry is a major topic on the new MCAT, this serves to her advantage. We also completed various passages online from both the biological and physical science sections. I was happy to note that she was generally strong in her content. However, as she agrees as well, she will need more support in better learning how to apply the content to the passages (application). This is something that she will need to continually develop throughout our future sessions.
