How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is the most accepted national standardized test for students seeking admission to over 1,200 independent and magnet junior high and high schools. The exam allows students from assorted backgrounds to contend for admissions to the top schools in America through a fair and unbiased test.

If your child is preoccupied with learning what they must do to pursue a high score on the test, an individual ISEE tutor can alleviate many of those concerns. You can contact one of the educational directors at Varsity Tutors and get connected with an ISEE tutor in Newton, MA. Their tutor can serve as your child's personal guide through the test-taking process, and give them an advantage over those students with whom they are competing for an admissions slot.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Newton, MA ISEE tutoring
The student had completed a quantitative reasoning section of a practice test. We spent the session going over her different methods to get the answers. She corrected herself on many of the easy ones so, I am confident that she will start to do better as she gets more comfortable with the test and it's language. We went over solving equations for a variable, comparing and converting decimals and fractions and percent applications.

Newton, MA ISEE tutoring
Today we went over her VR homework section and discussed the sorts of English and vocabulary lessons she's having in school, then we moved on to Quantitative Reasoning. She's picking up the strategies and using them very well on her verbal sections, and she just needs to take more time to check work on the math sections. With more pacing and order of difficulty I think she'll be more than set on both fronts in no time.

Newton, MA ISEE tutoring
The student and I went over the answers to some algebra questions that I had assigned her from the review book. She needs to work on the skill of isolating a variable to determine its value, and so I will give her some example problems. We also went over some vocabulary questions from a practice test. For the words that she did not know, I provided her with context clues about roots and she generated a study list. With a new list of roots and one provided by her school, the student created a short story to help her remember the meaning of certain Greek and Latin roots. She did not have time to complete the practice sections from the prep book, and she will work on this for next time. The student will also complete another short story using root words, and a practice math section.

Today we finished the math section, which she is definitely ready for. We then started on the verbal section. This will be our second time through it, so she should quickly pick it up. She is still doing great and does exercises between sessions.

Reviewed many math questions from last week and noted a couple of areas requiring a little more assistance including percentages and simple algebraic equations. Reading comprehension is coming along well and synonyms need a little extra work at home. Emphasis this week was on pre-algebra problems in mathematics. Students were left with a few pages of reading and math for homework.
