Students interested in applying to graduate school are oftentimes required to take the GRE, or Graduate Record Examination. The test covers many elements that are expected to have been learned throughout high school and college. It features a verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing section. The GRE is just one of many criteria used by admissions offices; yet it is one of the most important, as a strong score can set a student above the pack. At this point, the student is feeling a lot more comfortable using my approach and is seeing his scores begin to improve. During the session, we primarily reviewed and discussed two passages that he had completed over the prior week. We talked about the importance of keeping an open mind when reading a passage and not concluding that the first idea presented in a passage is definitely the most important idea. For next week, the student will complete more passages and identify each passage's key/most important paragraph (if any).

For the first 30 minutes, we had a discussion about applying to medical school, what the student can do to improve his chances and general MCAT prep strategy. For the remaining time, I first had him review a difficult passage to get warmed up. From there, we did a verbal test together. We stopped after each passage to discuss 1) the author's purpose 2) the author's opinion 3) topic sentences of each paragraph and 4) each answer. I've instructed him to solve the rest of the test on his own and send me his answers. During our next meeting, we will review the questions he got wrong.

Today, the student and I went over her previous studying habits for the verbal reasoning section. She said that her previous strategy included reading the questions first and then reading the passage. She said that she wasn't getting the results she wanted using this strategy. In this session, I suggested a different strategy which included active reading and identifying questions and answer types.

We first went over a few questions she had from verbal practice problems, then focused on general chemistry for the rest of the session. We discovered that she's been doing pretty well in verbal with the exception of new information/inference questions, so in terms of verbal we'll be focusing on that from now on. It seems like she's doing well with the material/concepts, so it'll mainly just be gaining more exposure to the questions and figuring out what strategies work best in terms of reading and answering the problems that are phrased strangely.

We covered Newton's Laws, Atomic explanation of the Normal Force, Friction. The student is a bit rusty on many of these physics concepts and the math associated with them. The rust shook off fairly quickly, especially as I showed her how to handle the most challenging of inclined plane problems to bring it all together. The student will review what we discussed, and she will read my website for a bare-bones preview of our next topics: Work, energy, and 2-d motion. She will do some Newtonian Mechanics problem sets recognizing that we may not have covered everything within what the question-writers consider Newtonian Mechanics.
