The student and I spent this session working on "revising sentence" questions on the SAT because these questions have proved the most challenging for her in the past sessions and overnight she has improved immensely!  For her homework, she only missed 5 out of 25 questions, and by the end of the session, she was consisting missing only 3-4 questions.  I have assigned her more "revising sentence" questions for homework, and tomorrow I will have her complete a timed essay and a complete writing SAT section.  On Thursday, our last day before the test date, I will have the student complete an entire writing section, and if we have time, I would like to work with her on some deep breathing techniques to help her alleviate her nerves.  She has made phenomenal progress, and I'm incredibly proud of her :)

We went over the format of the test generally. We really focused on the core strategy of attacking the questions, quickly identifying "easy" vs "hard," and skipping the "hard." Answer all the easy questions quickly, leaving plenty of time to deal with the hard questions. Eliminate incorrect choices to improve score dramatically over random guesses. Gave assignment to complete one timed practice test on or before Saturday, with our next appointment tentatively Sunday.

Today, I worked with both students on active marking strategies. Each lesson was designed to fit each student's level of understanding. In each case, I spent time teaching the students different marking strategies (symbols, questioning, arrows/underlining, note taking in the margins, brackets, etc.) focusing on how each technique can be used to create a road map of a given text and the reader's response to it. I then had each student mark up a sample text using the strategies he had just learned. I then asked Student 1 to start using these strategies in some of his school work. Student 2 was assigned 1/3 of a book and asked to use the marking strategies as he read.

Today we covered the concept of WACC (weighted average cost of capital). We watched a video explaining WACC and went over some WACC problems. We got through the problems by using the answers and working backwards, which proved effective. The student has a positive attitude when reviewing WACC and is not afraid to answer questions. She expects to go over WACC again in class tomorrow, where she is expected to receive her grade for the midterm test as well.
