"Helped the student generate some ideas for her leadership program essays, stressing specificity of experience, narrative, and individuality; practiced new concepts and worked problems in math section of SAT (she did a GREAT job with the reading on her practice exam)"
"I helped the student edit his paper. I highlighted areas that could use improvement and had him try to improve them on his own for a few minutes. More than half of the time his improvement was adequate, the others I had him read out loud, and when this didn't lead to the necessary improvement I voiced my concern and suggested a type of improvement (combining sentences, rewording awkward or ambiguous phrases, abrupt transition). I noticed the student's word decoding wasn't adequate for fluent reading of his essay, although I wasn't sure if this was because he was anxious or because his reading skills aren't yet strong."
"Today the student and I focused a lot on SSAT essay writing. I once again emphasized the important points of writing organization, including the importance of a thesis and supporting examples. We also practiced analogies and vocabulary. "
"The student went over some review for the assessment test in Social Studies. We had to do a word search on Russia during and after the World Wars. We also talked about his English project and what he was working on in English: the book "Animal Farm.""
"Worked with the student to help review for her final. We worked on an assignment that had several questions on all the topics covered by her physics course. We mostly worked on force vector problems. I also helped her review all the equations on the formula sheet to reintroduce them to her."
"We went over problems she answered incorrectly from practice tests. Then we did some writing sections together. I timed it and she does better when she takes note of the time. She tends to run out of time, but just reminding her at intervals about the time limit helps her solve problems faster. She has improved greatly in the writing section and is very good at understanding reading comprehension passages. The main concerns are the time limits on each section and her vocabulary."
"We discussed general techniques for achieving better scores on the SAT - which questions to skip, which to focus on. I assigned a list of SAT vocabulary words with the student responsible for 20-30 each session. I will quiz him on the meanings. We also worked through 2 sections of math problems. The student needs a refresher on math fundamentals, but is fairly sound."
"The student had homework, so we went over the reading and English passages she did. We finished the material for English and went through a bit more of the reading as well. She's done most of the practice tests in the book, so I'm looking into other sources of material so she can better put what she learns into practice."
"I continued working with the student, covering concepts found in the third practice test. I focused on optimizing his reading strategy for the last two sections. Additionally, I assigned him some daily work to complete until his test day to bolster his reading speed and comprehension."
"We reviewed her homework that was based on factorization. She has a good understanding of the material, so our focus is practice. We also introduced quadratic formulas, getting a little ahead of the class."
"During our session, the student finished the last passage of the reading section that we began last time. We went over her answers together after discussing the main points of the passage. Then, she worked on the math section for the remainder of the session. I answered any questions she had while working on the problems and went over any questions that she missed. I also spent extra time explaining sine, cosine, and tangent, which we will continue discussing next time."
"Today the student and I focused on optics and lenses, as we planned at our last meeting. We reviewed many basic concepts on mirrors and lenses including drawing them, using equations, and identifying what all the variables meant. We then used this concept review to begin working through many problems. She demonstrated a significantly improved mastery of these concepts while completing practice problems. We also reviewed one of the articles I had sent her between the last session and today, focusing on author's tone and point of view. We then went over one of the verbal passages she had completed in her review book. I will continue to send her articles daily for her practice. Next meeting, we will focus more on verbal passages and work together through examples."
