Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Newton, MA Biology tutoring
In our session, the student and I covered material from her chemistry course. Specifically, we dealt with Lewis dot structures and bonding patterns between elements. It appeared as if she had not initially fully understood the material when it was introduced in class, but as soon as we had gone through only a few practice problems, she demonstrated a clear understanding of the topic and was able to work through the rest of her homework with ease.

We covered the first 17 problems from her practice midterm and we went over how to attack her equilibrium problems. Specifically we went over redox reactions, how to balance equations under acidic and basic conditions, ideal gas equations, root-mean-square velocities, average kinetic energy, and partial pressure.

Today, the student and I went through the discussion questions for the penny lab. We calculated the weight and price of the zinc and copper components of a penny and discussed what happens when a notched penny is left in HCl overnight. Everything was very straightforward for her. I left a few reminders about unit conversion and rounding values to 3 significant figures, but otherwise there were no issues. The session went very well.

Today, I first introduced myself to the student and her mother. I came to understand that she is very bright (which she definitely proved during the lesson). First, we went over what they were learning in class, namely ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds. I had her familiarize herself with the periodic table and certain trends. After having her draw the Lewis structures for a few element groups, she was able to see a trend in charges for metals and non-metals. We went into ionic and covalent bonds and how to draw and portray them as well as their differences. We also went briefly into naming compounds, both molecular and ionic. I gave her a few concepts to go home and review. She is a fast and bright learner and was easily able to absorb the information very fast.

We worked together on practice problems online that covered heat of reaction, heat of formation, Hess's Law, and combustion. The student completed his homework and he scored well. He did not struggle with any of the material today and his pace will speed up with more practice. He is beginning to solve and understand problems independently without any guidance, meaning he is fully grasping concepts and not just plugging and chugging numbers. I left him with a summary of the important material we covered today.

Newton, MA Biology tutoring
This was a productive session. The student remembered much more compared to the previous session. He struggled most with answering questions quickly, but he has an understanding of the concepts. We continued to go over his study guide, focusing on proteins and gene expression. I told him to continue studying his notes for tomorrow's exam!
