I selected a mixed practice of Science GED questions from Chemistry, Phy Sci, Life Sci, Earth Sci, and Ecology for the student to complete. If she didn't know the answer and could not use process of elimination of the choices I did a mini lesson on the content. We have focused mostly on Math in her previous sessions. She was more focused and responsive in this session. We covered cell organelles, concentrations in solutions, cell transport across cell membrane, cell division (mitosis vs. meiosis), haploid vs. diploid, DNA/RNA/protein synthesis, biomes, planets, types of reactions (just a start on this), arteries and veins, peristalsis, and bronchus. The concepts covered were new so we didn't go into great depth and may need to review them again. We discussed strategies and word parts to help identify the answer. One example was that she recognized bronchus from knowing bronchitis.

I started the session with asking the student what he was wanting to accomplish on the ASVAB, and what areas he thought he needed to focus on. He wants to cover pretty much all of the material as a refresher. We started on the mathematics section today, just establishing a baseline of the kinds of problems he is comfortable with and what areas he needs help. We went over problems and solutions from a practice test out of the ASVAB prep book. We started discussing strategies for solving problems, as well. Overall, this was a great initial session.

I tried to get an idea of how capable she is by teaching her precalculus, since that is what she's learning in the fall. She seemed to understand most of it. To get a better idea, I asked if she could take a diagnostic test before next session. I will bring practice problems.

In my third session with the student, we went over reading and math practice test #2. Then the student completed reading #3 in which she improved her scores. We did some more practice writing on vocabulary and unknown words with clues on pos/neg connotation and using Latin roots and French to help decode words. We ended with a geometry review and the student completed practice problems I gave her of medium difficulty. The student feels confident on algebra, numbers, and equations, so we will focus primarily on medium- and high-level geometry problems for the next two sessions.

In our first session, we went over the test layout, types of questions, timing, and answering strategies. We reviewed the student's diagnostic exam. We reviewed the order of Presidents and the US Constitution Articles and Amendments. We discussed important topics from pre-Columbian through the Puritan era. I gave her homework for next week. Her attitude was excellent.

In our initial assessment SAT exams, most of the concepts being tested were unfamiliar to the student. This assessment is simply conducted to help me tailor our tutoring schedule and strategy. We agreed that the student will benefit from our sessions consisting of teaching new concepts followed by a topic based quiz. I find that students are more engaging when they are actively participating, thus the quizzes. This design requires team efforts and, when executed correctly, helps the student excel on the SAT. I am looking forward to working with her.
